“The Genius” Lanny Poffo — the brother of the late Randy “Macho Man” Savage — released a video poem in tribute to Savage on TMZ this week.
Many of us remember Poffo’s poems that he would read before the matches in 1980s, under the gimmicks of both the Genius and Leapin’ Lanny. I remember many house shows at the old Boston Garden at which Poffo would read his odes off the back of a souvenier Frisbee, which he would then toss into the crowd.
In his Savage tribute, Poffo notes it is the first Christmas he has had without the Macho Man around. Savage’s death may have been the biggest pro wrestling story of 2011, given the amount of mainstream coverage it received after he passed away in May. It would be no surprise to see Savage inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.
While it sometimes pains me to see what retired wrestlers look like after they get out of the ring and fall out of shape, I have to admit that Lanny Poffo is looking great — better than he did as a WWF wrestler with his long hair and bangs cut.
