I know everyone these days gets a kick out of the WWE’s anti-bullying campaign and those ironic public service announcements from Daniel Bryan, Brie and Nikki Bella, and others.
My favorite line from that PSA? Kofi Kingston telling kids, “Be a star!”
Those with deep memories recall that PSAs are not new to 2011. Sure, the first decade of the 21st century had plenty of “Don’t do this at home” PSAs reminding children not to really suplex their siblings on the floor.
But even before then, in the late 1980s, we had PSAs. The one that sticks in my head because it was so funny was from Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. Now stop for a minute and imagine that of all the people on the WWF roster in the ’80s, the Weasel was asked to do a good deed for the humanoids.
Anyway, Heenan’s PSA was about drunk driving, and I remember it almost word for word:
If you drive drunk, you’re dumb. And you’re stupid. Just walk.
My high school friend, Doug, used to do a great impression of Heenan’s lines that killed me every time he did it.
Wrestling personalities telling people not to get drunk? Not to bully others? Absolutely hilarious.
