February 6, 1988: DiBiase walked to the ring with the world title

A friend of mine from the Lowell Sun reminded me that Friday, February 5, 2010, was the 22-year anniversary of Andre the Giant beating Hulk Hogan for the WWF title on NBC. Andre then proceeded to hand over the belt to “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, and in one of the great wrestling bloopers, Andre told DiBiase in a live promo that he was giving him the “tag team championship.”

The next afternoon at the Boston Garden, DiBiase and Andre lost to Hogan and Bam Bam Bigelow. DiBiase came to the ring with the title belt and was announced as champion, one of the handful of times that happened before WWF President Jack Tunney stripped him of the title, thereby setting up the WrestleMania IV tournament.

In hindsight, DiBiase was one of the great heels of the 1980s and deserved a real run as champion. And perhaps above all things, including his in-ring ability, persona, and character, DiBiase had the greatest laugh in wrestling.

Really a shame that DiBiase was never an NWA or WWF world champion. He could flat out wrestle anybody. Saw a match years ago that he had with Ric Flair, and it was a true classic.
